How to Apply for Your NDIS Registration

Your step-by-step guide (made simple with Saami Services)

Becoming a registered NDIS provider can feel overwhelming…

But it doesn't have to be!

Becoming a registered NDIS provider can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. At Saami Services, we specialise in helping providers prepare for registration, build the right systems, and feel confident for audit day.

Below is a simple step-by-step guide to the NDIS registration process.

Throughout this process, Saami Services can provide you with pre-populated tools, templates, and guides that make preparation easier, faster, and audit-ready.

Step 1: Establish Your Business Foundation

Before you apply, you’ll need a basic business structure in place, which includes:

  • Registering your business (ASIC, ABN, company name).
  • Obtaining Director IDs.
  • Arranging professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
  • Setting up branding, emails, and a secure file-sharing system.
  • Recruiting key personnel and completing required worker checks (police checks, NDIS Worker Screening, mandatory training).

Saami Services provides a New Business Checklist to guide you through these essentials.

Step 2: Build Your Compliance Framework

You’ll need a suite of policies, procedures, and registers to demonstrate to auditors that you can deliver safe, high-quality services. Key documents include:

  • Governance and risk management policies
  • Service agreements and intake forms
  • Position descriptions and organisational charts
  • Professional website and marketing materials

Our ready-made policy packs are already mapped to the NDIS Practice Standards (and Aged Care too). No blank templates. No guesswork.

Step 3: Complete the Self-Assessment

The online NDIS application includes a self-assessment against the NDIS Practice Standards. You'll need to:

  • Show how your policies align with the Standards.
  • Provide evidence of governance and quality systems.
  • Address specialist standards if you deliver high-intensity supports.

You should prepare this in advance before beginning your application.  You can refer to the Practice Standards here: https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/rules-and-standards/ndis-practice-standards

Saami Services offers coaching to help you prepare strong, tailored responses that reflect your policies and practice.

Step 4: Submit your Application

Once you have prepared your self-assessment and gathered all supporting documents, you must submit your application through the NDIS Commission’s online portal.  You can apply through this link: https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/provider-registration/apply-registration

Be sure to:

  • Double-check all information in your application is accurate and consistent.
  • Ensure you have uploaded all required evidence.
  • Keep a copy of your submission for your records.

Step 5: Prepare for the External Audit

Once you submit your application, the NDIS Commission will issue you a Scope of Audit. This document outlines the type and level of audit you are required to undergo. From there, you must select an auditor from the Commission’s list of approved auditors (https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/provider-registration/apply-registration/find-auditor).

  • Stage 1: Review of your policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Stage 2: Interviews with staff, management, and sometimes participants, plus site visits (if applicable).

To get ready, you’ll need to:

  • Organise your folder structure for easy access.
  • Provide de-identified client and staff lists.
  • Finalise consents, service agreements, and risk assessments.
  • Schedule meetings and ensure your team is prepared.

We have an Audit Preparation Checklist and Sample Audit Questions to help you cover every requirement.

Step 6: Maintain Ongoing Compliance

Registration isn’t just about passing the audit—it’s about building a sustainable system of governance, risk management, and continuous improvement. This means:

  • Conducting internal audits.
  • Keeping registers up to date.
  • Holding governance committee meetings.
  • Seeking feedback from clients and staff.
  • Regularly reviewing and updating your policies.

At Saami Services, we provide coaching and compliance programs to keep you “audit-ready” all year round.

Ready to Get Started?

NDIS registration is a big step, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

With the right tools, templates, and guidance, you can move through the process faster, smoother, and more confidently.
